Freshman Morgan Patch is a clean, new addition to the artists at Glenwood Springs High School. She enjoys art in the form of paintings, drawings, jewelry, and more. Patch’s definition of art is “a way to be creative, be yourself, do what you want, and just show people who you are.”
Patch not only explores her creativity on her own time, but at school as well. She is currently taking art one with teacher John Linn, and she also took a class over the summer every Wednesday for three hours.
In the summer class Patch completed many assignments including painting masks, still life, and live birds. She learned how to create defined details with a paintbrush using watercolor and oil paints.
The oil painting was one of the more difficult projects she has completed. It was tough because the paint wouldn’t come out of the brushes and it took almost four days to dry.
“[My inspiration is] nature I guess, because there’s so many different scenes to paint or copy or draw and just be creative with,” Patch said.
As far as school and grades go, Patch said, “I want to keep doing good in school and stay organized throughout the year. Even if school isn’t her favorite activity, school is not a terrible struggle for Patch. She says that if she could incorporate art into every other subject, school would be a lot more enjoyable.
Patch said she involves herself with art because it gives her a way to have fun and express herself.
“It’s fun and entertaining; you can do whatever you want,” Patch said. “By using things I like in my art [you can tell who I am], it’s things that catch my interest.”
Her most recent projects include a completion drawing in art class, and making beaded jewelry, like necklaces, bracelets, anklets, and earrings, at home. On the side she’s constantly doodling, never able to withhold her creative juices.
Patch has been selling her homemade jewelry to family and friends for right now, but is thinking about opening up her sales to more customers. There’s a chance that she will make a website where she plans to sell and expand her merchandise. The possibilities of new inventory include pillowcases, bookmarks, and orders for custom jewelry.
One of her goals for the future is to be able to sell her paintings, because it would be more of a challenge. Patch is already confident in her jewelry and its ability to sell, but thinks it would be neat to become talented enough to sell drawings and paintings as well.
Every day she is growing in her art by experimenting with a variety of projects. Patch plans to expand her horizons as an artist while she enables herself to incorporate creativity into her everyday life.
